Legend, a book written by Marie Lu, is set in a dystopian world where everything you do is monitored by a constricting government called the Republic, who may or may not have the citizens best interests at heart.
Fifteen year old June is an exceptionally gifted prodigy who is being groomed by the Republic to be a military star. She's everything the Republic stands for; smart, pretty, strong, quick thinking and able to take down an enemy in an instant. But when her brother is murdered, she embarks on a mission to find his killer, and discovers that all evidence points towards Day, a notorious criminal who is already wanted by the Republic for many other crimes, but never murder. Their paths cross and after uncovering the Republic's dirty secret they are both left questioning what they know about their lives, the government, and what's really right and wrong.
Legend is an exciting story. It's fast paced and never boring. The characters are believable and relatable, even if they are smarter than your average teenager. Lu is great at describing emotion and the new experiences brought on by the discovery of this new world, which is riddled with secrets and beaten by a rebellion. The only problem I have is that Legend is much too short, at just under 300 pages. But I'm used to larger books, so who knows, it could be the perfect size for everyone else.
The sequel is called Prodigy, and I personally can't wait to read more of June and Day's story.
Life before Legend, a prequel to the Legend triology, was published in January 2013. It describes the lives of June and Day before they met and their very different worlds within the Republic.
Prodigy is the second book in the Legend trilogy, also published in January 2013. The Elector Primo has died and the Republic is collapsing into chaos. June and Day join a group of Patriot rebels, but in return for their help in rescuing Day's brother they mus assassinate the new Elector. Check out the book trailer here.
Champion is the final book in the trilogy, and due to be released in November 2013. The Republic is on the brink of a new existence. June is working in the government and Day is a top military official. But a new strain of plague threatens the lives of thousands and June is the only one who knows the key to saving the country
